Good for you! You've decided to take the first step and start counseling. Now what?
Once you have decided to work with a therapist you will need to make an initial contact and schedule an appointment. The initial appointment is called an 'Intake Session'.
At this initial appointment, you will be discussing the issues that are bringing you into counsling services. Typically, the time allotment for this first appointment is between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on your therapist and need.
You should arrive to your first appointment 10 minutes early to make sure that you have sufficient time to complete any paperwork that your therapist needs. It is important to BRING YOUR INSURANCE information if you are utilizing your insurance benefits. This may be a card, copy of your insurance card, or online verifiation. Know that some insurances need an authorization for mental health services, so make sure that you call to verify:
Remember that your first appointment does not mean that you have to continue with that therapist. Just like relationships with other professionals, you have the freedom to choose. And to get all that you need out of therapy, you should be working with a provider that you feel you can connect with and build a solid rapport with. It wont hurt our feelings, we want the best out of services for you too!
